Amazon has announced it, like other retailers such as Best Buy, will be handing out $50 gift-certificates voluntarily to purchasers of HD DVD players before February 23rd 2008 in response to Toshiba’s abandonment of the format back in February.
Toshiba has decided it will abandon the HD DVD format; a rival blue-laser optical disc technology also used by the Blu-Ray discs. HD DVD’s had been locked in a battle with the Blu-Ray discs to become the next-generation heir to the DVD since 2002 when both companies revealed their plans to use this blue-laser technology.
