Obama is not the Antichrist!

Rejoice, all ye believers, for Obama is not the Antichrist!

That is the proclamation Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, authors of the Left Behind series, have rendered unto us. Christian Newswire:

I’ve gotten a lot of questions the last few weeks asking if Obama is the antichrist,” says novelist Jenkins. “I tell everyone that I don’t think the antichrist will come out of politics, especially American politics.”

“I can see by the language he uses why people think he could be the antichrist,” adds LaHaye, “but from my reading of scripture, he doesn’t meet the criteria. There is no indication in the Bible that the antichrist will be an American.”

Perhaps, to play Captain Obvious for a moment, that’s because there was no word in ancient Greek for “America”.

Lies, damn lies and statistics

lies-damn-lies-and-statistics

The New York Times has conducted a poll (hat tip: Democracy in America) on race in America. Its results? According to the accompanying article,

Americans’ perceptions of the fall presidential election between Mr. Obama, Democrat of Illinois, and Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, also underlined the racial discord that the poll found. More than 80 percent of black voters said they had a favorable opinion of Mr. Obama; about 30 percent of white voters said they had a favorable opinion of him.

Take a close look at the graphic, though: More »

The Italian language police

July 14th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in News
the-italian-language-police

Silvio Berlusconi, the intractable, obstinate and stupid Italian prime minister, has thrown a tantrum over the fact that EU meetings use the languages that most Europeans speak, not Italian. He has “advised his ministers to walk out of EU meetings in which they are forced to speak another language, and boycott those for which there is no documentation available in Italian,” writes Certain Ideas of Europe (hat tip).

He is protesting the use of “working” or “procedural” languages, i.e., English, French and German, although the idea makes a lot of sense. Wikipedia tells me that English speaking countries (the UK and Ireland) make up 13% of the EU’s population; French speaking countries (France, Luxembourg and the Wallonia region of Belgium) make up 14%; and German speaking countries (Germany and Austria) make up 18%. Thus countries speaking the working languages make up almost half (45%) of the EU population, plus the fact that English is huge as a second language, so that it’s safe to venture that a majority of Europeans have command of at least one of the working languages. Thus in an area with 27 different nations, and 23 official languages (really 22, since Gaelic’s just for show) it makes sense to use a limited set of core languages that most people know, so that EU politicians and bureaucrats don’t have to know 22 languages, many of which (Bulgarian? Latvian? Finnish?) are only useful in one country, as opposed to several.

What I would prefer to see, as a Eurosceptic from afar of sorts, is a disbandment of the Union entirely so that everyone can get back to free trade in whatever language they’d like. That’s highly unlikely, though, so I’m not counting on it.

I knew ads would be a bad idea!!!

i-knew-ads-would-be-a-bad-idea

Due to a recent lack of donations, I’ve thrown up two banner ads on the site. One of them is ours, which helps to support us, and the other is Link’s, to help support both us and D-Pad. Now, I was set on thinking this was a pretty good idea… you know, make some money and stuff without worrying of begging people for it and looking like a jerk, but I soon learned otherwise…

Iraq wants a Deadline for US Withdrawl

July 8th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in News
iraq-wants-a-deadline-for-us-withdrawl

Man, I just love how we can go in and try to fix the government in Iraq but we make no effort to do anything in places that need the help more. The world is seriously an embarassment to itself. I can’t wait to see the human race just tear itself to shreds or for the Cloverfield monster to just come and destroy everything.

Anyways, yesterday an Iraqi government spokesperson said that they want the United States to place a deadline on when they’re going to be pulling their troops and allied forces from the country. He also said a pullout within 3-5 years would be possible.

“It can be 2011 or 2012,” al-Dabbagh said. “We don’t have a specific date in mind, but we need to agree on the principle of setting a deadline.”

Al-Dabbagh’s comments come as the United States and Iraq try to negotiate a framework governing the stationing of U.S. and allied troops beyond the end of 2008, when the current U.N. mandate for coalition forces expires.

Al-Dabbagh said any such deal should include a withdrawal deadline. A day earlier, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki also said he favored a short-term accord that would spell out a withdrawal schedule for U.S. troops.

buy-yourself-a-life-on-ebay

Before I go to sleep finally (I mean, It’s 2:40AM here right now…) I’ll just post some quick news to supplement for the lack of it here lately.

An Australian man has put his “entire life” up for sale on eBay. Ian Usher is offering his house, car, motorbike, jetski, and all his other goodies he has via the internet’s largest auction site. The winner of the auction will even get introductions to Usher’s friends and family, as well as a two-week trial at his current job as a carpet store assistant.
