I stumbled upon a registry hack on the internet quite a while ago that would allow you to get RC1 of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP through Microsoft Update a bit early. Care to try it? Download the file below (right click -> Save as) and then run it. After running, head on over to Microsoft Update and you should be able to find SP3 in the list of things available for you to download. Enjoy.

I’ve done this before, and I personally don’t recommend it. It has some annoying glitches, and certain programs won’t work with it. And you’ll lose the ability to use custom themes. And if you choose to uninstall it later, you’ll have to reinstall just about all your hardware and the computer will freeze more.

Wait, what do you mean “certain programs don’t work with it?” It’s still Windows XP. I haven’t had any custom theme issues with it. You’re probably just having trouble because you have Vista Transformation Pack or whatever installed. Service-Packs are meant to make the operating system more reliable, not bug out. (Unless you’re talking about Vista SP1)

I don’t have VTP. I’ve had it uninstalled for a long time now. And some progams won’t work, because the program recognizes that it’s running SP3, and then won’t proceed to run. And what I meant to say instead of themes, was custom windows and buttons. I’m just going to wait for the final release.

That’s weird. What were you trying to run?

This:

But that one’s understandable. I’m just saying that there’s proabably other programmers who program their programs so that they won’t install unless is it recognizes that it’s running SP2. And plus, this SP3 is only a beta.

Yeah, but everyone loves release-candidates. And probably all programs out there that need SP2 make sure they’re running SP2, yeah, or a newer Service Pack.
